Former Celtic target Ben Davies to agree loan deal move to Sheffield United from Liverpool

Sheffield United appear to have won the race to secure Liverpool’s surplus to requirements central defender Ben Davies on a loan deal from the Anfield club. Liverpool nipped in at the end of the January transfer window to beat Celtic to a pre-contract signing of the the then Preston North End defender but since arriving at the Premier League club, Davies has failed to make a single appearance and is now on his way to the Anfield exit door.

And with Celtic reportedly interested in making it second time lucky as far as bringing the left sided central defender to Parkhead, it appears according to a report on Sky Sports this morning, that Davies is instead heading out to Bramall Lane rather than Celtic Park.

Sky Sport reporter Lyall Thomas reports on a season-long deal being agreed this morning with the final details are being arranged for Ben Davies to complete the move early next week; Davies joined Liverpool in a £2m deal from Preston in January but has not made a first-team appearance.

Lyall Thomas reports: “The Reds had planned to keep Davies as back-up, but Rhys Williams is said to have impressed Jurgen Klopp in pre-season and Davies needs regular games. Davies joined Liverpool in a £2m deal from Preston in January but has not made a competitive first-team appearance.

Liverpool were struggling with centre-back options last season, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip injured, so also brought in Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke that month. They have since signed Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig this summer in a £36m deal.

Sheffield United have been keen to get an option to buy clause included in the deal but this has been rejected by Liverpool who are looking to maximise the transfer fee they can get for a player they’re unlikely ever to play. Crazy game these days but at least we can cross Ben Davies off the potential Celtic signings list for at least the next year…
