Former Gers boss thinks Fraser Forster signing would be ‘massive’ for Celtic

ALEX MCLEISH has said that Fraser Forster re-signing for Celtic would be ‘massive’ for Neil Lennon’s title aspirations. The former Rangers and Scotland manager told Football Insider that the 32-year-old is trusted by his teammates, something that experienced goalkeepers bring to teams as well as giving them stability at the back.

“Yes, you would imagine that Fraser Forster coming back to Celtic would be a massive coup. Especially given the form that McGregor’s in. Looking at Marshall in the Scotland set up too.

“They’re all older goalkeepers but they’re all outstanding, and totally trusted by the players around and about them. That’s why I made the comparisons with those goalkeepers.”

Forster has been linked again with a move to Celtic after failing to make any appearances for Southampton this season. The Saints have also been linked with a potential January move for Accrington Stanley’s Toby Savin meaning that Forster’s chances of any game time at the Premier League club are next to none.

Instead, he could come back to Celtic and make a contribution towards 10IAR and help Neil Lennon strengthen his backline. Vasilis Barkas has underwhelmed since joining from AEK Athens and Scott Bain hasn’t been up to the task of replacing him therefore third choice goalie Conor Hazard made his competitive debut versus Lille on Thursday night.

One stumbling block with any deal for Forster is his £90k-a-week wage packet that he still has eighteen months remaining. Saints will be keen to get Forster off of their books so a deal could potentially be done.
