Former Premier League keeper backs Postecoglou to swoop for Mat Ryan

Mark Bosnich has tipped Ange Postecoglou to swoop in and sign Brighton’s Mat Ryan from under Arsenal’s noses as Celtic ramp up preparations for the new season. The ex-Manchester United goalkeeper believes that the 29-year-old would suit Postecoglou’s style of play at Celtic and given the history between the pair, Bosnich reckons a move makes sense for all parties.

Speaking to BBC Sportsound, Bosnich believes that Ryan’s abilities suit Postecoglou’s style of play and that a move for the ex-Valencia goalie would suit the current predicament that the club finds itself in because the manager knows and trusts Ryan.

“Ange likes his goalkeepers to be sweeper keepers with the way he plays and that’s what Matty Ryan is. He knows him very well. He likes his centre backs to be able to bring the ball out and take risks. His possession game is intense based and needs players in key positions who can take those risks regardless of pressure.

“I’m sure the club will have targets but the more players you bring I the more time it takes to bed everyone down and he won’t have the time he’s had in the past.

“I’m not sure he’ll go into the Australian and J-League market because it will take players time to adapt to the Scottish Premiership. I could be wrong and he might do that but the fact he’s been given a 12-month rolling contract suggests he won’t have that time.”

Ryan spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal with The Gunners keen on bringing the Australian back on a permanent basis as back-up to the current No.1 Bernd Leno. The player is said to want first team football, something that Celtic would likely be able offer along with the prospect of playing for trophies and in Europe.

Postecoglou made him his No.1 with Australia and they enjoyed success. The pair clearly know eachother well and a move for Ryan could be solution to Celtic’s goalkeeping woes from last season.
