Alex McLeish claims that Odsonne Edouard still has another season to “catch the eye” before he leaves Celtic.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager said that he believes French Eddy could move to “any league in the world” at present, but that he might have to wait another year before he gets the high-profile move he deserves.
McLeish thinks that a big move could be on the cards for Edouard one day, but suggests that he will likely need to spend at least one more year at Parkhead before such an offer comes his way.
McLeish said: “There’s no doubt about it, he’s now getting great press, he’s a player who has been recognised as a top player who can go to the Premier League, he can go to any league in the world. The question for the big man and the challenge for him is he has to keep firing these bullets every day and every week in the Scottish Premiership to ensure there’s another chapter in his career in the future. Maybe not this season but the only way he can catch the eye is to keep scoring goals.”
Despite McLeish’s comments being music to Celtic supporting ears, it should be noted that Edouard currently averages 1.73 goals per game for France U21s and he scored two goals in as many games for the French youth side again during this most recent international break.
Overall, Edouard has netted a total of 64 goals in 130 Celtic appearances, chipping in with 32 assists on top of that.
He has proved himself at Europa League, international U21 and SPFL level. Aston Villa are rumoured to be interested in bidding for the Frenchman, but a top move that he will undoubtedly want might not come about just yet and another strong season in Glasgow suits both player and club superbly.
