Fran Alonso confirms January transfer striker intentions

Fran Alonso confirmed today to The Celtic Star this afternoon that he will be in the market for another striker as he looks to reinforce the squad in January.

During the Celtic AGM last Wednesday, Fran told shareholders that his number one transfer target was going to be a striker. Currently, Kit Loferski is the only natural striker that we have at the club. Although throughout the season, we have seen Amy Gallacher and Murphy Agnew play in the position.

During his press conference this afternoon, Fran revealed that another striker had agreed a move to Celtic, but that it fell through. He said: “We actually had a striker agreed – verbally agreed – but then she changed her mind at the end of the transfer window.

“The following day was the transfer window [deadline]so we didn’t have time to bring anyone in that position. So, we were a little bit short.

“We’ve got Kit, who is the natural striker. Then we play Amy and Murphy there, who are actually number 10s, but because they are so good, they can play anywhere.

“We are thinking of bringing one striker in January.”

You may remember that last January, we brought in Tash Flint on loan from Leicester City. So, hopefully, whoever comes in to complete a great squad will have the same impact that she had last season.]

Fran also confirmed that the transfer is not a direct reaction to Kit Loferski’s injury, saying: “It’s not because of the injury.” As reported earlier on The Celtic Star, Loferski is set to be side-lined until the new year, but Fran was always looking for a natural striker to back the American up, as reiterated by the transfer that fell through earlier in the year.

I, like most fans, am certainly excited for the new faces we might be seeing in January. Our squad is immensely talented, and Fran is determined to find the right balance of players to round off a perfect team. And one final note – anyone got Sam Kerr’s number? I think she’d suit the Hoops…
