Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has responded to Neil Lennon’s suggestion that Celtic were excellent last night by brandishing his former club’s performance as “terrible”, despite the result.
Celtic got revenge over Jim Goodwin’s side with a 4-0 victory, their second win by such a margin in the last three games. However, it was a tight affair until a late flurry of goals gave the Hoops a sizable cushion.
McAvennie was unimpressed by what he saw and contests Lennon’s analysis of the match. When asked, by Football Insider, what he thought of the display McAvennie answered to the outlet: “Terrible. There were no signs of improvement in that first half. Lenny said afterwards that they were outstanding and I was like, ‘Are you joking?’”
After slamming the first half display, Macca did acknowledge that the second 45 was much better, though he still sees a lot of room for improvement.
“They were better in the second half but even then, they were not as good as what they can be,” he said.
“It was not a 4-0 game. They were not streets ahead of St Mirren to be fair to them. Lenny coming out and saying they were excellent… Yes, they kept the ball but they were slow and lethargic.”
The club’s Centenary season striker then concluded: “St Mirren just sat there and we couldn’t penetrate them. Teams of old would have known how to break down defences like that. It was a bit disappointing. The season has been a disappointment though.
“It is the first time they have had a proper challenge and they have buckled. I am not happy about it.”
Agree 100 %, for 60 minutes we looked bang average, there seems to be a total lack of confidence till we go a couple of goals up. Winning 4 nil flattered CELTIC and lennon saying it was an excellent performance against a very difficult team to beat doesn’t help one bit.
