“Gap is going to get bigger, rather than smaller,” McCoist

Ally McCoist reflected on a dramatic weekend of football in the cinch Premiership on TalkSPORT this morning in what is truly a Blue Monday for the followers of the latest Ibrox club.  And he reckons that those fans are concerned that the seven points gap at the top of the league that Celtic now enjoy is only going to get bigger rather than smaller.

Celtic were pulled back to 2-2 on the 89th minute on Saturday against Dundee United much to the delight of theRangers fans listening to Hugh Keevins on their radios. But that joy was short-lived as first Kyogo then Liel Abada wrapped up the three point with late goals as the Celtic supporters nearly blew the roof off with the noise of their celebrations inside Celtic Park.

Things went from bad to worse on Sunday lunchtime when St Johnstone raced into a two goal lead against the Ibrox outfit who managed a consolation goal that their captain actually celebrated with a quarter of an hour remaining. But it was too little too late for theRangers as the Saints held on to record a significant win in their season, a third in a row for Callum Davidson’s side, the kind of form that Giovanni Christiaan van Bronckhorst can only dream of.

Coming immediately after their status as SIMPLY THE WORST team ever to play in the Champions League Group stages was confirmed after six straight defeats and a massive goal difference deficit, the latest set-back in the cinch Premiership, leaves theRangers seven points behind Celtic who also have a huge goal difference advantage.

Reflecting on all of this on his TalkSPORT appearance this morning Ally McCoist, the former manager of theRangers said: “I’ve said this for a while now and I don’t think it’s rocket science. We’ve lost players that were capable of getting a team to a Europa League final and we’ve not replaced them with anything like the same quality or the same physicality.

“We lost Bassey for great money – £22million (it was actually around £19million, Ally, but you know that, right?) – to Ajax. Aribo’s away to Southampton, Patterson away to Everton. These were definitely excellent players but also had a physicality about them.

“It’s quite simple; they’ve not been replaced to the standard of football has been nothing like as good as it was last season,” McCoist stated.

“But the problem Rangers have got now is that they’re seven points behind Celtic. In typical Celtic fashion – and that’s a compliment – lost a goal to make it 2-2 round about the 89th minute and still found time to score two goals because they’ve got something about them.

“There’s a general concern and a real worry from the fans that the gap is going to get bigger, rather than smaller.”

The tears, glorious isn’t it?
