Giorgos Giakoumakis MLS wage laid bare as league chiefs disclose player salaries

Giorgos Giakoumakis left Celtic in the January transfer window to jump over the pond for Atlanta United in a shock move that saw Oh-Hyeon gyu replace the Greek goalscorer – and it has been revealed how much he is currently earning in the States.

With a multitude of incomings to the MLS this season, Giakoumakis has fared better than most after taking to the league like a duck to water. Five league goals so far this season has seen him become a fan favourite at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, and despite losing their last three games, the Georgia-state side sit fourth in the Eastern Conference table, well on track to qualify for the next round of the MLS season.

After contract talks broke down with Celtic, Giakoumakis reportedly made it clear in November that he wanted to leave the club, despite winning the top goalscorer award in his debut Scottish Premiership season – with Atlanta beating offers from Asia and Europe for his signature.

And, in a document released by the league itself which shows how much money each player earns per year, Giakoumakis appears to have landed himself a decent wage totalling £1.4million per year.

The striker earns $1.75m per season, which in the currently economic climate, exchanges to £1.4m. That figure, divided by 52, brings him to a weekly wage of just under £27,000 per week – a superb wage in what was more than likely an increase on his wage whilst at Parkhead.

Elsewhere, former SPL star Ryan Gauld earns a whopping £2m per season at Vancouver Whitecaps, whilst Victor Wanyama is on just a touch more than Giakoumakis, earning £1.42m per year.
