Glasgow City 2 Celtic 0 – David Potter was watching

A disappointing performance from Celtic but it has to be admitted that Glasgow City were the sharper, crisper team. Celtic had their moments but Charlie Wellings missed one glorious chance at a key moment, and then goalkeeper Chloe Logan was badly injured, In addition, one has to say that Glasgow United should have been down to 10 women after a pretty shocking high tackle just at the end of the first half. But that’s life!

In some ways, we were unlucky, but you make your own luck. One suspects that the SWPL may now have gone from Celtic but they will still have their League Cup to look back upon with happiness and the Scottish Cup is yet to come. So still a lot to play for this season for Fran Alonso and his girls. We wish them well.

Four general observations:

  • 1. A comparative paucity of Celtic supporters there in the disappointing crowd. Considering that the game was in Glasgow on a night that was cold certainly, but clear and dry, we could have done with a few more green and white bedecked people. The Celtic Star did encourage everyone to go as well!
  • 2. It would have been nice to see one or two from the men’s team. An Ange, or a Callum or a Cameron or a Joe in the crowd might have done a lot to encourage the girls.
  • 3. I still hate these all-weather pitches. Give me grass all the time!
  • 4. Why can’t the girls be allowed to play at Celtic Park? Don’t give me any guff about damaging the pitch! The pitch is astonishingly little used for such an expensive piece of equipment, and I refuse to believe that it would sustain any serious damage with a few more games. The girls might even get a bigger crowd as well – and that would be bound to help them. Maybe a few supporters clubs could be persuaded to run a bus.

We don’t really support these girls well enough. They are Celtic too!
