Greg Taylor admits regret at Celtic exit

Former Celtic defender Greg Taylor has admitted regret at the way that he left the club. The Scotland International departed quietly at the end of last season after weeks of speculation about his future.

Speaking to Paul Slane of Open Goal, Taylor admitted that the time to move on was right but the nature of his departure was disappointing.

“I just think it was probably the time for everyone,” Taylor said.

“I had an amazing six years there. I was at an age that I want to be playing regularly and that was probably the main reason for going.

“In January Dinamo Zagreb were really keen to sign me at that point but I was determined to stay and finish the season.

“We were doing in the Champions League with the play-off against Bayern Munich and we had a chance at the treble.

“I was really determined that no matter what, I wasn’t ruling out staying at Celtic, but I definitely wanted to finish the season.

“The last game was disappointing in terms losing the cup final after doing so well for so long. To finish it like that, it was sad.

“I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye properly because I didn’t know if I was going for 100 per cent. I hadn’t decided what I wanted to do.”

It was a shame that Taylor didn’t get the send off that his service at Celtic deserved.

After signing from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019 to replace Tierney, Taylor has won 11 major trophies. The fullback has fought off a number of players for the jersey, even adapting his game to play as an inverted left back under Ange Postecoglou. Taylor has made 216 appearances for Celtic, scoring 9 goals and assisting on 33 occasions.
