Former Celtic defender Greg Taylor has dismissed the notion that he was close to joining Rangers. The Scottish internationalist left Celtic Park in the summer after six seasons in the Hoops.
With his contract running down, Celtic had been eager to extend his stay but with the returning Kieran Tierney, it was difficult to offer Taylor the length of deal required or the game time required.
There had been suggestions in the media that Rangers could sign Taylor given his quality, experience and his free status. Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, Taylor was asked about these links and gave a straightforward dismissal to the bizarre reports.
Hutton: “The rumour mill said that ‘he was close to Rangers.’ That was the rumour mill. That’s what we heard, so he doesn’t have to answer it.”
Darrell Currie: “Alan had talked you up for Rangers.”
Hutton: “I am just saying.”
Currie: “The silence says it all there.”
Taylor: “No, no, no. It’s not silence. I was not close, let’s get that out of the way.”
Hutton: “Right, okay. Okay.”
Currie: “That’s put to bed, Al. That’s put to bed.”
After signing from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019 to replace Tierney, Taylor has won 11 major trophies. The fullback has fought off a number of players for the jersey, even adapting his game to play as an inverted left back under Ange Postecoglou. Taylor has made 216 appearances for Celtic, scoring 9 goals and assisting on 33 occasions.
Taylor has struggled since moving to PAOK, whilst he is enjoying the lifestyle switch it is believed that he is not enjoying Greek football. His game time would reflect this and it remains to be seen whether he will stick out his three years or whether he will return closer to home.
