Hampden Heroics – Scotland Captain Andy Robertson joins applause

Scotland’s game against Georgia last night will live long in the memory for various reasons. Firstly, it made history as we became unbeaten in our fourth qualifying campaign match for the very first time in the country’s footballing existence. Secondly, it placed us eight points clear at the top of Group A ahead of Spain and Norway. And thirdly, there was a nearly two-hour delay to the game due to adverse weather conditions.

The third reason is the one most likely to be the thing that allows future generations to reminisce over one night at Hampden Park in which we made history. The rain was like nothing we’d seen before, even by Scottish standards as the pitch became more like a swimming pool, as opposed to an arena for the playing of football.

But the game did eventually get back going with Scotland looking to build on their early goal which was tucked away expertly by Celtic’s very own Callum McGregor. A beautifully placed shot was enough to see us ahead before the referee halted time just a mere 10 minutes into the fixture, leaving many fearing the worst.

Typical Scotland we all thought.

But, with some perseverance and persistence, the game was allowed to reccomence shortly after half-past-nine and all credit must go to the amazing efforts and contributions of the groundstaff and others who all chipped in and played their part to help. Even the ballboys rolled up their sleeves to ensure Scotland had the opportunity to finish what we started on the night so well.

It was one of those wonderfully rare instances in life and football for that matter, that we all recognise the importance of the every man, instead of the superstars who we pay good money to go and watch. And fair play to our national team captain, Andrew Robertson, who joined in with the applause online via social media platform Twitter.

Retweeting an earlier post from the Scottish National Team Twitter account, which read: “A big hand for these legends”, Robbo simply put clapping gestures above it as he reposted the message. All for one and one for all!

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
