Hearts drop more points as Celtic can go top next weekend

Hearts conceded more points this afternoon as impressive Motherwell held the Premiership leaders at Fir Park. Derek McInnes’ side made it three games without a win, opening the door to Celtic to make ground up on the table toppers.

The 0-0 draw sets up an intriguing prospect for next weekend’s meeting between the Premiership top two.

Celtic travel to Edinburgh tomorrow to face Hibernian in what is expected to be Martin O’Neill’s last game as interim manager. The Irishman has been fantastic since stepping into the dugout after Brendan Rodgers’ shock departure.

Wilfried Nancy is expected to take over with the Frenchman likely to be in the dugout for the midweek card. Celtic face Dundee during the week while Hearts host Kilmarnock. If Celtic can get two wins before facing the Tynecastle side, they can go ahead of them in the table next weekend.

The fact that Celtic are in a position to take the top spot off Hearts after a short turnaround is testament to O’Neill, Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, who stepped into the breach after Rodgers left. Galvanising the squad and helping make a Cup Final, reviving their Europa League campaign and cutting the Hearts’ lead means that the new manager has a good opportunity to come in and hit the ground running.
