History could repeat itself at Ibrox for Celtic’s Scales and Lagerbielke pairing

Surely Lagerbielke can’t be any worse than what we currently have? Could Gustaf end up playing alongside Liam Scales at Ibrox for the second time this season?

With CCV on the sidelines yet again and Maik Nawrocki also absent we are rather short in cover in the centre back area.

Yesterday it the Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales show who were our central defensive pairing against Livingston and it turned out to be a comedy of errors. Both are players who give their all, but without being disrespectful they aren’t the quality we desire at the heart of our defence.

Liam Scales has exceeded expectations this season, but playing beside CCV is a huge part of that and it’s fair to say he looks lost without him. While Stephen Welsh is a squad player and nothing more really, similar to Anthony Ralston. Both play when required and can be sure to show 100% commitment.

Yesterday both Scales and Welsh looked very ordinary and struggled against a side rooted at the bottom of the table yesterday, and that tells its own story. Meanwhile Gustaf Lagerbielke, remember him? A Swedish international and one of the most highly rated defenders to come out of the Allsvenskan is left on the bench, it beggars belief.

Brendan Rodgers takes training and sees him up more closely than any of us, but surely he can’t be any worse than what we have currently? The club after all blocked his loan move to Italy in the January window because of a lack of cover. So why don’t we play him? It’s one of several bizarre decisions made by Brendan Rodgers this campaign.

The last time Celtic were at Ibrox we had Scales and Lagerbielke as our central defensive partnership in the 1-0 win last September. It’s edging towards that happening again, is it not?
