All the recent drama regarding Brendan Rodgers and his imminent return to Celtic had me casting my mind back to the summer of 1997. We were of course looking for a new man to lead the side after the dismissal of the late, great Tommy Burns and numerous names were thrown about. From Bobby Robson to Louis Van Gaal, everyone was in with a shot.
Of course it was long before the days of social media and the newspapers and sports bulletins on the radio and television were our only source of information. The situation back then was even more tense than presently as we were going into one of the most important seasons in our recent history as we were under intense pressure to stop their dreaded 10 in a row.
Hugh Keevins then of The Scotsman and now of the Sunday Mail got carried away and ‘exclusively’ revealed that Portuguese boss Artur Jorge was to be the new man to take charge at Celtic Park. Low and behold it was then revealed that Dutchman Wim Jansen formally of Sanfreece Hiroshima was to be the new manager and Wee Shug had egg on his face, not for the first time and definitely not the last as he continues to waffle his abject nonsense to this very day.
Wim Jansen was the last man the media expected to be unveiled and bit back the only way they can when it comes to our club, they ridiculed his appointment and disgracefully ridiculed Wim himself.
‘The worst thing to hit Hiroshima since the atom bomb’ was one disgraceful headline. Wee Wim was a European Cup Winner and World Cup finalist as a player and had managed at a more than decent level. On one occasion a Scottish hack asked Wim if the upcoming Old Firm games was the most important match he’d been involved in and he reminded him about that World Cup Final appearance.
Wim of course had the last laugh as he led us to the League Cup and of course won us our first title in a decade thus stopping their 10 in a row attempt.
He then departed sticking two fingers up to our shoddy media. Good on you Wim. God bless.

Funny you mentioning this. I was reading about it in “Fergus McCann Versus David Murray” by Stephen O’Donnell only yesterday.
Then you’ll know it was actually the Scotsman that Keevins was working for at the time Robert 😉
Keevins is to journalism , as what Saddam Hussein was to human rights !
