“I don’t know them”, Brendan Rodgers pours cold water on transfer links

Brendan Rodgers has poured cold water on links with Gremio winger Ferreira and Mohamed Reda. The Scottish Champions were beaten in their opening friendly against Yokohama F Marinos, where they were beaten 6-4 by the Japanese Champions.

After the game, Rodgers was pleased with the workout that his team got, despite some questionable defending throughout the match. Since arriving in Japan, the Irishman has been consistent with his message that he is looking to improve the squad in preparation for the new season.

Rodgers was asked specifically about the links to Gremio’s Ferreira and Egyptian talent Reda and his response was particularly telling.

“I don’t know them to be honest.”

Football Scotland and the Record linked both players with moves to the club last night but suggested that it was merely at the approach stage. Rodgers’ answer suggests that this isn’t the case and that the club will not be making a move for the pair.

Moi Elyounoussi and Brazilian winger Tete have been touted in recent weeks with a potential move to Paradise, both are available on free transfers.

Elsewhere, Yang Hyun-Jan has arrived in the UK as he looks to complete his £2.1m deal from Gangwon. Celtic are also due to sign Hyun-Jan’s compatriot Kwon Hyeok-kyu in a deal worth £1m. With the automatic qualification for the Champions League, Celtic are in a favourable position with regards to dealing in the transfer market. Furthermore, the substantial fee received for Jota has bolstered the coffers for Rodgers to realise the club’s ambitions in Europe as well as continued success domestically.
