“I really needed that,” admits Giorgos Giakoumakis

Giorgos Giakoumakis reflected on his game-changing goal in Perth which saw Celtic seize all three points from St Johnstone in Perth.

After conceding a gut-wrenching equalising goal in the dying embers of the match, it wasn’t looking likely that Celtic would take three points in Perth and would have to settle with one. However, Giakoumakis stepped up and netted a goal in the 95th minute of the match, just a minute after conceding.

Speaking to CelticTV, Giakoumakis said: “I don’t want to play the big guy now but the moment we conceded the goal, and we kicked off, I was looking at the goalpost and I was imagining how good it was going to be to score the last-minute goal.”

“I dreamed it and believed in that. Bernabei did an amazing assist. That’s how we won the game. I think we should have won this game a bit easier, it wasn’t the best game from us. We know that we have to improve. We have to find ourselves again.

“I celebrated this goal a little bit more passionately than normal. I really needed that goal. I need to start believing in myself a little bit more. This was my first start in the league this season. It wasn’t that good for me.”

Giakoumakis was a game-saver and made a real impact on his first league start. He should be pleased with his performance as his determination helped secure the points against St Johnstone.

Next up, Celtic play RB Leipzig on Tuesday, so Giakoumakis will be looking forward to that and hoping to make another important impact either by starting or coming on from the bench.
