“I was over the moon with it,” Alistair Johnston on Celtic debut at Ibrox

Alistair Johnston took part in a Q&A with the Celtic supporters via Twitter this afternoon, as the new addition at right-back was quizzed by fans all wanting to ask the Canadian questions. The 24-year-old picked his 10 favourites which were submitted online by the supporters and there was a few crackers.

The full-back was inevitably asked about how he is adapting to life in the goldfish bowl that is Glasgow and whether or not he feels as though there are similarities between Scotland and his homeland of Canada. The weather was the stock reply in this instance! No surprises there then.

One of the most interesting answers was on the question of his Glasgow Derby debut against theRangers at Ibrox. Knowing that this could be the first chance he would be eligible for to get a taste of what it’s like playing in the famous green and white hooped jersey, Johnston was emphatic in his response when asked about that match.

He said: “I was over the moon with it. It’s a match I’ve had circled on my calendar since I knew I was signing. It’s the first one that could have been my debut so I wanted to do everything possible to make sure I was available and in contention.”

It was a remarkable first appearance for the Hoops by the young defender and he bosses the right-hand side of the pitch that day on 2 January. His fantastic debut away from home against our fierce rivals is one that will live long in the memory as there hasn’t been many that have been more notable. He’s a true leader on the pitch and loves to get stuck in. It was probably the perfect way for Ally to introduce himself to the Celtic supporters and Scottish football.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
