“I would go Jens Berthel Askou,” Mulgrew’s tip for next Celtic manager

Charlie Mulgrew has revealed that in his view Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou will become Celtic’s next manager in the summer…

The Danish coach has impressed at Fir Park this season, guiding the Steelmen to an attractive style of play while keeping them within reach of the top three despite operating on a far smaller budget.

Motherwell have suffered just three league defeats so far and have picked up results against both Celtic and the latest Ibrox club, while also remaining unbeaten against current leaders Hearts.

Although he has been in charge in Lanarkshire for less than a year, the 43-year-old has already been linked with the Celtic job as the club prepare to appoint a long-term successor at the end of the campaign.

Mulgrew added that Askou has attracted interest from English Championship teams, including Blackburn, and believes Celtic should be making their own move.

Speaking on his podcast The Breakdown, Mulgrew said: “If I had to put money on it I would go Jens Berthel Askou. He’s right on the doorstep and surely the question has to be asked.

“I know he’s wanted by Championship sides down south. I would be asking him the question. I think it will be him. Blackburn contacted his agent. I’m not sure if it’s a club he’d be keen to jump at.”

Former Ibrox midfielder Kevin Thompson, who is on the podcast alongside Mulgrew added: “With the manager being under their noses and on their doorstep, and powers that be watching how he’s performed miracles when you think of the budget disparity – even compared to Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen – Motherwell’s budget will be slim.”

“Never mind the Old Firm (sic) budgets when you think of Rangers going and spending £13m or £14m in January. The style he’s implemented and success he’s had off the back of it…”
