Idah delivered but still chased, Dolberg should be a decent signing

Adam Idah is nearing the end of his short Celtic career after a £7 million bid from English championship side Swansea City has been reported to have been accepted…

A real difference maker in his first four months at the club, Idah scored some crucial goals that helped tip a tight Celtic race against Philippe Clement’s theRangers in Celtic’s favour. He then came off the bench in the against the same mob to score the only goal of the game in the 2024 Scottish Cup final.

Idah followed that us with 20 goals last season, mostly after coming on from the bench as he played the second striker role behind firstly want-away Kyogo and then Daizen Maeda.

Three league games in and a penalty shoot-out miss in the Champions League play-off and Idah’s away, a victim of an incessant online attack from our support, worse than Scales gets and also Arne Engels from these authors of our own misfortune.

Idah’s price tag was the problem, but that wasn’t his fault

Idah’s price tag was the problem, as indeed is Engels’. Neither player set the transfer fees paid and in Adam’s case the nature of the deal Celtic did to bring him up from Norwich, where he was third choice striker and rather optimistically valued at £3m, meant that the Carrow Road club were able to extract another £5m from Celtic due to how well Idah had done in Glasgow.

When you strip out the add-ons Celtic will just about have broken even on buying then selling Idah, so that lost money concern was effectively nonsense, as indeed would be the case if Engels is also chased out the door.

With Adam now likely to leave in the next 48 hours it’s crucial we get a replacement or two in the door especially with the clock running down on the transfer window.

Anderlecht striker Kasper Dolberg appears to be coming in

Reports have indicated that we are looking to make a bid of £8 million for Anderlecht striker Kasper Dolberg. If true then we can only applaud our club’s ambitions for once as he would prove to be a tremendous signing in my opinion.

Dolberg 27 is an experienced international striker who’s entering the peak years of his career, not exactly the type of player we usual splash the cash on, so it’s a bit of a surprise to say the least.

6ft 2in Dolberg is not only proven on the international stage, but at club level with Ajax, Nice, and Anderlecht, with a career record of 115 goals in 323 games. He’s a proven experienced goalscorer, he’s exactly what we need.

Get it done Celtic and the best of luck to Adam Idah, a player who gave everything, delivered but ultimately was disrespected and his confidence destroyed by trolls and keyboard experts within our own ranks. They’ll be happy this morning.

  1. Well said in regards to the incessant trolling and jabs at Idah from our own ranks. It has been appalling. If a player signing for us seen how these fans were, I’d be surprised if they even came. It’s toxic.

  2. You said the same as most Idah was a good signing you never know thats why I dont blame Celtic for going for him and the club and manager are right to sell him take a small hit and use the money to get another striker in on Sunday we play the Rangers Miaeda will move in balliwinski will start then the usual maybe Engels in and Nygren out wide cause forest is never played a decent game at ipox need our wide men wide only hope the Rangers attack but im sure they will sit in and hit us on the break play from the back cant see Celtic getting beat but need players with belief forrest no way can start yang to he holds on to ball after beating man he wants to do it again get the ball across dont give defender another chance do you agree and of course they will get nothing from officail and var might be a few doggie lines man in middle not barred form var cause of honest mistakes 😜 against Celtic

  3. Beat me to it PERMO, I echo both your own and JUSTANORDINARYBHOY’S comments. Many in our so called ‘One big Family’ support should sling their hook!!

  4. Raymond Duffy on

Just read a comment suggesting the line up and using the term ‘wide men’. Thats the problem, our wingers don’t go wide, they cut insides, time after time. As I’ve said before, if we employ a bug, traditional striker, we must supply crosses from width and not clog up the box by cutting inside. Frankly, I feel sorry for Idah, the lack of service was his demise. Anyway, good luck to him.

  5. Or maybe Idah is leaving for other reasons you haven’t heard about…
Nonetheless he wasn’t good enough and the received bid from Ipswich was such an opportunity they jumped on it. And well they did.

    • I had real hopes for big Idah this year and wanted him to have turned a corner and hit the ground running. Unfortunately his confidence looks evaporated, and he’s just not focussed in key moments.
As for the incoming, I was still not sure of MAB and his credentials but will be interesting to see what he offers out wide.
Dolberg was a bit of a surprise. Seems to be a bit of a player in there.

But ….. why are we in this position for the umpteenth year? Selling players, derailing our European qualifications and then grabbing players at the 12th hour? It’s utterly utterly amateur and unnecessary for a club with cash in the bank.

Rodgers also needs to get a grip in this Derby. Said it before, bin the tippy tappy bollocks and get back to the blitzkrieg tactics of BRs first years’ in charge. Take the game right into their faces like Brugge did.

  6. What a childish Article to defend Idahs tenure by blaming it on ‘online Trolls’ and Keyboard Assassins. Idah was brilliant on Loan and his goals secured us the Title Against a Clement Rangers team that really should have won the League. For that Idaho will always be well regarded.Bur last season the Floor was clear for him to step up when Kyogo left and he proved to be incapable of being Celtics lead striker. Or his 20 goals most of these goals were not crucial goas in Big games Most of all Idahs body language has been Dour and miserable during his entire duration as A Celtic player and he gave off a negative energy that you can’t have as top for 11 regular. He looked sad an unsettled during his entire Celtic Career. Its was Idahs unsuitability as.a Lead striker that made his Celtic Career short not online critics.

  7. I saw Idah play for Éire and when I heard that Celtic had signed him, I thought to myself how far have our club fallen. A terrible signing.

  8. Brian McAllister on

Idah’s imminent departure has absolutely ZERO to do with online criticism. You seem to be deluded about the power of your profession to influence the manager’s decision. What a ridiculous argument. Utter garbage. BR doesn’t give two shits what illiterate online morons write. He’s off beacuse he is showing all the signs of a striker unable to hit a cow’s arse with a shovel. His confidence is fragile and we aren’t a charity. We can’t wait for him to come good. Cost us enough already. We need a proven striker NOW banging them in. He will never be that player for us.

  9. Can’t argue that the price has probably played some part of Idahs performance but…

You fail to mention the flip side of this argument.

    Dreadful first touch.
    Worse second touch.
    Can’t pass.
    Can’t hold the ball up.
    No real pace.
    No real strength.
Can only score from 8yrds out.
    (excluding pens).

Maybe the problem here is if we got Idah for £2m we all wouldn’t have a problem calling him out as an extremely poor signing.

He played one full 90mins during his initial loan period. That was always a tell tale sign for me.

  10. The supporters are only calling it as they see it. The supporters aren’t daft as we can all see he isn’t good enough. Apart from his goal against the huns in the Cup final last year and his equaliser at ibrox, what has he done to warrant a first team start ? His hold-up play is shocking, and for a big guy, he has zero physicality. There’s a reason why maeda played mostly through the middle last season. I doubt any supporter wants to have a go at any player who pulls on the hoops but we should be able to criticise a player if he’s not pulling his weight which idah hasn’t done. He’s not been hounded out the door, he just isn’t good enough.

  11. We are getting rid of Idah and bringing in a like for like replacement.

Both had one good season but take it over their careers to date and they both score a goal every 3 games.
That is a third choice striker at Celtic.
We need guys that score a goal every two games consistently.

The scouting team are utterly incompetent. I can’t believe there is not more outrage directed at them.

    • Brian McAllister on

I’d suggest the Danish striker is a rather more established high profile player with a superior goal scoring record than Adam Idah. Classic dismissing a player before he even signs!
