If Celtic can’t keep Cummings questions will need to be answered

Daniel Cummings attracting interest from down south. If Celtic can’t keep him questions will rightly be asked, one will be if Celtic can develop Doak, Kelly, Vata and Cummings why can’t we retain their services?

Daniel Cummings is a player who is impressing in the Celtic B side this season. The 18 year old has scored 24 goals in as many games this season which has brought him to the attention of the Celtic supporters, and more importantly Brendan Rodgers who recently named him on the bench for the recent 4-1 win in Dingwall against Ross County.

Cummings out of contract in June 2025

Daniel is out of contract in the summer, and this has unsurprisingly caught the attention of several clubs with West Ham and Brighton the most recent sides credited with an interest in the Scottish youth international.

The club to their credit are pushing for him to sign a new deal, but with our track record of failing to hold on to young talent, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

If Daniel does indeed join the likes of Ben Doak, Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata in heading down south, questions will quite rightly be asked over our competency in retaining the best players emerging from the Celtic Academy.

Our best young players are opting to leave

Young players are opting to leave without even having had a sniff of regular first team football, and that is rather concerning. It’s something that the club are clearly aware of but solutions need to be found and part of that is a clear pathway into the first team. It seems young players don’t think that going to be a viable option and that could be the problem. It’s going to be down to Michael Nicholson and Brendan Rodgers to find the answers.

Of course there is the financial aspect, but the lack of first team opportunities for our youth players is also a worry. Breaking into the Celtic first team is difficult for any youngster, but surely we have to ask why that is?

It’s time the club started to address this situation as grassroots level is one of great importance.

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. With young players breaking into the senior squad, you’re virtually guaranteed some inconsistency, and for most the transition will require some careful management as they adapt to the pressure and the step up in quality and intensity.
But on the flip side, there’s no way anybody can tell me that the money we’ve invested in expensive disappointments from abroad (1 or 2 per year) could be better spent on retaining our top home talent. Think about the guys we’ve purchased who have offered nothing in return. I realise it’s not an exact science, and equally you can’t guarantee a youth player will develop quickly in the first team environment, but for these players listed above, if the talent is recognised, then we need to act quicker and treat them as real long term investments in the team. Especially with the 25 man European squad rules for home grown talent.

  2. For someone who calls himself, “Just an ordinary Bhoy” you sure have a lot of negative stuff to post about what is OFFICIALLY the best run club in Britain!
The fact is, the drain south, and even overseas, of young Scottish talent is not only a Celtic problem. If you’d been paying attention to what has been happening in Scotland for the past 25-30 years you may just have noticed that there is no reserve league or alternative league for the up and coming youngsters to make the step up from academy level to the first team!
The SFA destroyed this years ago! I guess “the rangers” stopped winning that too, so the SFA saw no further use for it!
But instead of you constant negativity towards the club you claim to back, try doing a bit of research first!
