IFK Göteborg move onto new target as Barkas’ exit option disappears

Vasilis Barkas’ Celtic escape route appears to be closing as IFK Goteborg have moved onto a new target, according to a report. The 27-year-old has struggled since arriving at Celtic and it appeared that a move to Sweden might be in the offing; however, Aftonbladet are claiming that Ørjan Nyland is the primary target for the Swedish club.

The Gothenburg side were said to be keen on signing the goalkeeper but the financials were unable to be bridged. Celtic will have likely wanted a chunk of Barkas’ wage covered as well as a loan fee as they try and recoup the outlays on what has been a poor signing. Sheffield United decided against pursuing a deal for the Greek Internationalist due to the financials but the way that it stands, Barkas will be remaining at Celtic.

Barkas has made just two appearances this season but finds himself down the pecking order at Celtic. The arrival of Hart as well as Scott Bain being given a new deal suggests that the prospect of breaking back into the first team is slim. The former £4.5m man will be keen to get his career back on track by sealing a move away from Celtic, it would be in everyone’s best interests if this could be achieved at the earliest possible opportunity.
