“It didn’t pay off”, Goodwin defends Celtic tactics

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin has defended the tactics employed by his side against Celtic in Tuesday’s game against Rangers. The Scottish Champions were dominant at Pittodrie, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Callum McGregor.

Skipper McGregor struck in the 87th minute with a fine left footed strike to announce his return to competitive action after weeks out. However, Goodwin said (via The Sun) that his team had followed his game plan well defensively but were left disappointed with plans offensively.

“We tried to contain them and frustrate. We denied them a lot of space in behind, which is what Kyogo and Maeda want.
“I thought we defended really well throughout the game but we weren’t able to do anything with the ball when we had possession.

“We turned over possession too cheaply and in the second half, we didn’t offer a great deal going forward.

“It’s disappointing, it’s not the style we’ve been used to this year, we’re one of the highest scorers in the league at home and our fans in the main have been very well entertained.

“Unfortunately on Saturday it didn’t pay off. If we’d have taken a 0-0 from it, it would have been a great start back after the World Cup.”

Dons supporters left the ground disgruntled that they had set up up with two banks of four and two strikers up the pitch. Effectively, it was a back sight intent on limiting Celtic’s space.

Celtic will be hoping that Aberdeen can turn up against Rangers on Tuesday, helping the Scottish Champions by getting a result at Pittodrie.
