“It’s a credit to the Ghirls, they are really incredible,” Fran Alonso

When your team has score in excess of 100 goals, and the season is just entering the month of March, it would be understandable for a manager to laud the attacking options at his disposal.

And whilst Fran Alonso – who saw his side follow up a 3-0 Derby ‘skelping on Friday with a thumping magnificent seven goals against Hamilton Accies away from home last night – has praised his team’s ability to grab the goals, there was also a determination from the manager, speaking to Celtic TV after the game, to outline his case for the defence who have conceded just three goals all season as the Hoops look to win their first ever SWPL1 title this season.

Last night’s Celtic Huddle at Hamilton ahead of the Magnificent 7-0 win for the Hoops

“Absolutely delighted, the ghirls are playing at a very high level and we couldn’t go in any better form for Sunday’s game. It’s more than 100 goals, but we have also only conceded three all season,” Alonso noted.

“It’s a credit to the Ghirls, they are really incredible. It was the same the other day, 3-0 (against theRangers), yet we defend with our lives to keep a clean sheet.  I’m very proud of them but they have to carry on. That’s the thing when you are at Celtic we are as good as our last game so every single game you have to put in this type of performance. And today the same, we didn’t want to concede and we managed another clean sheet so delighted.”

It is perfectly understandable that Fran Alonso would wish to ensure his side’s defensive achievements are recognised as much as his side’s attacking prowess, because this weekend both will be needed as Celtic entertain Glasgow City at the Excelsior stadium on Sunday.

Two of the paltry three goals Celtic have conceded game in the first meeting between the sides in October, where Celtic, despite not being at their best, were still unlucky to lose by the odd goal in three.

This time out Sunday’s game is a top of the table clash, where a win for Celtic, thanks to their ten-goal superior goal difference, would see the Hoops climb to the top of the SWPL1 table.

City defeated Motherwell 3-0 at Petershill Park last night, but couldn’t match Celtic’s Magnificent Seven return. And a home tie against City now affords Celtic the opportunity to right the wrongs of that meeting earlier in the season and at the same time send out a message to the whole division that Celtic are bona fide league challengers this campaign, as Alonso’s side look to surpass even the incredible domestic cup double they won last season.

This Celtic side is certainly now building momentum towards lifting that first ever SWPL1 title but Glasgow City will offer a stern challenge for Alonso’s side on Sunday. As such a big support at the Excelsior Stadium would certainly help the Celtic cause.

Celtic achieved a record-breaking crowd last Friday evening for the 3-0 win over theRangers but hopefully that record will be short-lived and will be beaten this Sunday afternoon for the 4.10pm kick-off, Celtic v Glasgow City.

The timing is perfect to allow Celtic supporters in the West of Scotland to watch the Scottish Premiership game against St Mirren which will be over before 2pm and then head over to Airdrie to watch Celtic storm to the top of the SWPL1.

Twice last season Celtic and Glasgow City met in cup finals. On both occasions Celtic had the backing of thousands of supporters and each time the team responded to bring home the silverware. You can be sure that The Celtic fans at the Glasgow Derby skelping on Friday night loved every minute of the experience and they’ll all be back on Sunday.

And for those who enjoyed the match on BBC ALBA many will be tempted to get along to Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium for what is potentially one of the biggest matches the Celtic Women’s team has ever played. The more Celtic fans who make it along equates to a higher chance that Celtic will win.

The Celtic team complete their warm-up ahead of the 7-0 win over Hamilton.

The match with theRangers showed Celtic are more than capable of performing to their maximum when backed by the noise generated by a huge Celtic support. And for those planning ahead to Sunday’s top of the table clash with Glasgow City, tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here with an adult ticket costing £8, a concession at £4 or a combined child and adult ticket for just a tenner.

And if you bring the weans along, don’t be in a hurry to leave the stadium as The Celtic players will be happy to spend time with them and will pose for photos etc – which the wee-ones all absolutely love!

It’s perfectly priced football, great for a family day out and a unbelievable chance of watching Glasgow Celtic putting on a show and going top of the SWPL1 table with a win.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
