‘It’s five star Celtic’ – Putting on a show at Love Street 40 years ago today

Celtic looked in the mood at Love Street 40 years ago today, striking four times without reply in a superb first-half performance to finish the contest by the interval, MacLeod, Burns, Sullivan and McCluskey all on target as they tore the Saints apart.

The teams were as follows:

St Mirren: Thomson McCormack Beckett Abercromby Fulton Copland Boag (McDougall) Stark Bone Richardson Copland Sub: McEachran Scorers: McDougall 48, 61

Celtic: Bonner McGrain Reid Moyes McAdam MacLeod Crainie Sullivan McGarvey (P McStay) McCluskey Burns Sub: Conroy Scorers: MacLeod 17, 50 Burns 30 Sullivan 37 McCluskey 44

Attendance: 17,084

Celtic Wiki Match Review of this match as follows:  Celtic turned on a devastating performance in the first half to go four up.  MacLeod opened the scoring with a glorious volley and Celtic went for the throat before half time. Sullivan and Burns scored good goals before McCluskey scored a cracker after a fine run and finish from a tight angle.

Celtic played into the strong wind in the second half and Saints used the conditions to their advantage but McGarvey missed two great chances late on. Danny Crainie hugely impressed on his debut with his touch, control and intelligent play.

The continued absence of Provan allowed Danny Crainie a first-team bow wide on the right and he did not disappoint, with the first of many good displays in the title run-in. Murdo added a fifth, sandwiched between a McDougall double, as the title chasing Celts declared at 5-2.

Daniel Crainie challenges St Mirren’s Jimmy Bone.

I always say that this team was a goalie and two central defensive players short of winning European trophies, everywhere else in the team we had top quality players
