It’s Now or Never Celtic – Award winning Ivan Toney’s Peterborough transfer nears as Newcastle Utd eye 30% cut

IVAN TONEY popped up on social media yesterday to show off his personal awards won for his goalscoring exploits with Peterborough last season. The Celtic target won both the EFL Player of the Year award and also the Peterborough supporters Player of the Year Award. He certainly looks pleased at his success!

“EFL player of the year. Thanks to everybody that played a part in helping me achieve this award. Onwards and upwards!” Toney tweeted.

“Honoured to be named fans player of the year it goes to show that my efforts didn’t go unnoticed and I gave my everything on and off the pitch. Would like to thank every single one of the fans for this special award,” Toney added.

Peterborough yesterday brought in a new striker and if you read through the supporter comments below these tweets you’ll see there is a complete understanding that their star striker is clearly moving on this summer. That we all know.

Brentford, who lost the Championship Play-off to Fulham, continue to hover around with various ways of making their bid up to £10m – it’s around £6.5m plus add ons – but the player seems reluctant to go there.

Gavin Strachan was a coach at Peterborough before moving to Celtic to replace Damien Duff and is a big admirer of Toney. The gossip that the player fancies a move to Celtic may be wishful thinking but we do know from the Barry Fry and his Chairman that Celtic have asked to be kept informed and also that an earlier Celtic bid has been rejected. Peterborough tried to coax a second, improved bid from Celtic but nothing seemed to happen and it’s all gone a bit quiet.

But Toney still hasn’t moved. Yesterday Celtic completed the signing of David Turnbull from Motherwell and he stands a decent chance of making a quick-fire debut on Sunday against his old club.

Is Toney still on the radar? And if so is he the man that Celtic are going to look to to replace Odsonne Edouard when he goes, presumably at the end of the season? If that is the plan then getting him in now I surely the right thing to do. The fee to Peterborough will only be a fraction of the huge sums that Celtic will make selling Edouard after he helps deliver the Ten.

Newcastle Utd apparently have a 30% sell-on clause in any transfer involving Toney so the Peterborough bosses talking up to the selling price is perhaps a little more understandable. If Celtic want the player then it’s decision time now.
