It’s win or bust for the Rangers: “They’re hanging onto Celtic’s coat-tails,” Ally McCoist admits

Alongside his Talksport pal Alan Brazil, Ally McCoist had written Ange Postecoglou off before he’d even got his feet under the table, but credit where it’s due, of late the former Ibrox striker has been far more fulsome in his praise for the job the Celtic manager is doing, having got his side to the top of the Scottish Premiership, three points ahead of theRangers and with a goal difference that is fast approaching the equivalent of an extra point.

So much so in fact that McCoist, speaking to Sky Sports today has admitted a defeat for the latest club he supports would make it nigh on impossible for theRangers to stop Celtic, as the Hoops look to transfer an incredible 31 game undefeated domestic run into silverware at the end of the league campaign.

“I don’t think (the)Rangers can clearly afford to get beat. Postecoglou has done a great job at Celtic. They’ve got themselves in a very, very good position.

“From (the)Rangers’ point of view, defeat is unthinkable, it really is. I think that would make the gap far too big. They’re hanging onto Celtic’s coat-tails. This game coming up, I think we’ll see a different (the)Rangers. It’s certainly a game they cannot afford to lose.”

McCoist has stopped short of saying it’s win or bust for the Ibrox side, preferring to describe the encounter as a must not lose for his club, but reading between the lines McCoist clearly knows theRangers have to win at Ibrox a week on Sunday if they want to take the title race down to the wire. And that’s quite a turnaround from the hilarity shown in the Talksport studio when it was announce Ange Postecoglou would be taking over at Celtic.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
