Jim Craig – Bristol City legend Gerry Sweeney’s Celtic start, Mark McGhee

After a senior career during which he had spells with Morton (1975-77), Newcastle United (1977-79), Aberdeen (1979-1984) and Hamburg ( 1984-85), Mark McGhee joined Celtic in November 1985.

Over the following four years, the striker made 113 appearances in the Hoops, scoring 34 goals, his best season the ‘Double’- winning campaign of 1987-88.

On this day in 1989, Mark McGhee returned to Newcastle United.

And Many Happy Returns to a player who was very kind to me when I first joined Celtic in January 1965.

Gerry Sweeney was a midfielder who never got a chance in the first team as there were so many top quality players at Parkhead at that time. In 1966, Gerry moved to Morton, with whom he played 137 matches and then was transferred to Bristol City in 1971, making 402 appearances at Ashton Gate over the following eleven years.
