Jim Craig – Celtic beat Rangers in 1974 penalty shoot-out

After losing in three successive Dryborough Cup finals ( 1971 – Aberdeen 1-2 Pittodrie; 1972 – Hibs 3-5 Hampden ; 1973 – Hibs 0-1 Hampden) Celtic reached the last stage of the competition again a year later, when they faced Rangers in the final on this day at Hampden in 1974.

Midfielder Steve Murray put Celtic into the lead but the Light Blues equalised to take the tie into extra-time. Paul Wilson then made it 2-1 for Celtic but Rangers again drew level to take the match to a penalty shoot-out.

Midfielder Tommy Callaghan was on target for the Hoops, as was Steve Murray.

Full back Pat McCluskey also gave his customary demonstration of the art of taking penalties, leaving Jimmy Johnstone to take the decisive one and the Wee Man did not let anyone down, slamming the ball into the net to give Celtic victory in the shoot-out by 4 goals to 2.

Many Happy Returns to Frank Brogan, born on this day in 1942.
