JIM YOUNG came into Celtic from Bristol Rovers in the summer of 1903 and soon stamped his authority on the team as a wing half, showing, strength, stamina and power, although the odd deft touch could be employed when necessary.
Ironically nicknamed ‘Sunny’ after an advert of the time, Jim Young played 443 matches for Celtic over the following 14 years before damaging his knee irretrievably against Hearts in the autumn of 1916.
His list of trophies is almost unbelievable. 10 league titles, five Scottish Cups (and don’t forget, it was suspended during the First World War), 7 Glasgow Cups and 9 Charity Cups. He was also skipper of the side when it went 66 games without defeat from 20 November 1915 till 21 April 1917.
Tragically, on this day in 1922, Jim Young died from injuries received when the motorbike on which he was a pillion passenger was in collision with a tramcar on the Wellington Bridge between Kilmarnock and Hurlford.
He was 40 years of age.
