Jim Craig – Celtic’s Davie McLean and Scott Duncan

In season 1907-08, Celtic had started the league campaign pretty well, winning 7 and drawing 2 of their first 10 matches.

In April 1907, Willie Maley had brought in centre-forward Davie McLean from Forfar Athletic and on this day in 1907, he gave the 17-year-old his chance in a league match against Port Glasgow Athletic.

Davie McLean took his chance well, scoring a debut hat-trick as Celtic won 5-0. He went on to score 19 in total in just 28 matches but by 1909, he was on his way to Preston North End.

Scott Duncan, born on this day in 1888, joined Rangers in 1913. In January 1919, though, apparently at the invitation of the great Jimmy McMenemy, he accepted an offer to play two matches for Celtic, against Third Lanark and Clydebank, both of which Celtic won.

After that unusual period, Scott Duncan went on to have a long career in the game. He had spells as a player with Partick Thistle, Dumbarton and Cowdenbeath; took over the role of secretary/manager with Hamilton (1923-25), Cowdenbeath (1925-32), Manchester United (1932-37) and Ipswich Town ( 1937 onwards) before retiring in May 1958.
Scott Duncan died on 3 October 1975, at the age of 87.
