Jim Craig – Celtic’s hat-trick heroes

Dixie Deans from the 1970s…..Jimmy Walsh, the 1950s…..Willie Buchan, 1930s…..Chris Sutton, the noughties……Patsy Gallagher, the 1910s and 1920s…….Brian McClair, the 1980s.

All these Celtic stars are among the 100 or more players who have scored a hat-trick for Celtic since the first season of 1888/89. The club might have had poor spells during the ensuing years but they always had guys who could score goals.

Some scored more than others, of course, especially when it came to hat-tricks.

Jimmy McGrory got a remarkable 55…..Jimmy Quinn 20….Bobby Lennox 15…..Henrik Larsson 15….Steve Chalmers 14….Sandy MacMahon 13.

The most important one, though, the first, came on this day in 1888, when inside-left Mick Dunbar scored three as Celtic beat Cowlairs 8-0 in a Scottish Cup tie at First Celtic Park.

I wonder if the club’s directors followed the cricket tradition and bought him a new hat! Which is why it is called a hat-trick!

Many Happy Returns to Jimmy Bone, who made 11 appearances for Celtic in 1974 and 1975.
