Jim Craig – On this day in 1975, Celtic 7 Valur 0

A crowd of around 16,000 was at Celtic Park on the evening of this day in 1975 to see the second leg of the Cup-Winners’ Cup first-round tie between the hosts and Valur of Iceland.

The Celtic side on the night was Latchford, McGrain, Lynch, P McCluskey, MacDonald, Edvaldsson, Wilson, Dalglish, Deans, Callaghan and Hood.

Celtic were 2-up from the first leg in Iceland and did not take long to stamp their authority on the return game, Johannes Edvaldsson, ironically an Icelander, putting Celtic one-up in six minutes. By half-time, that goal tally had increased to five -nil, through Kenny Dalglish (12), Pat McCluskey (30, pen), Harry Hood (37) and Dixie Deans (42).

Five minutes after the break, Tommy Callaghan got his name on the score sheet to make it 6-0 and eight minutes from the end, Harry Hood scored his second making the final score 7-0, putting Celtic into the second round on a 9-0 aggregate.

Many Happy Returns to Frank McCarron, born on this day in 1943.
