Jim Craig: After the Ibrox Disaster Rangers needed to bring in some money

After the Ibrox Disaster of 1902, when a stand at the ground collapsed during the Scotland/England international, causing the deaths of 25 supporters with over 500 injured, Rangers needed to bring in some money for compensation and put up for competition the Glasgow Exhibition Trophy they had won the previous year.

Two English clubs and Celtic were invited to take part in the special tournament.

Celtic beat Sunderland 5-1 in one of the semi-finals and Rangers, after a 1-1 draw in the first match, beat Everton 3-2 in the replay of the other.

On this day in 1902, the players of Celtic and Rangers ran out at Cathkin Park, the home of Third Lanark, for the final. The Celtic team was McPherson, Watson, Battles, Loney, Marshall, Orr, Crawford, Campbell, Quinn, McDermott, Hamilton and a crowd of some 7,000 was there for the occasion.

After 90 minutes, the teams were locked on 2-2, so the match went to extra-time and it was two minutes before the end of the additional period before the deadlock was broken, Jimmy Quinn apparently hoisting himself up using the shoulders of Tommy McDermott to power home the goal which gave him a hat-trick and Celtic the trophy.

Goalkeeper Lubos Kamenar – born on this day in 1987 – joined Celtic on loan from Spartak Trnava in the Czech Republic in August 2012 but failed to get a chance in the first team and moved to Gyor in August 2013.
