Jim Craig – John Thomson suffered a depressed fracture of the skull

ONE of the saddest days in the history of Celtic. At Ibrox Park on this day in 1931 in the first Old F*rm clash of the season, goalkeeper John Thomson suffered a depressed fracture of the skull when he came off his line to dive for the ball at the feet of Rangers centre-forward Sam English.

John was carried off the field and taken by ambulance to the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow but tragically died later that evening.

Thomson was 22 years of age but had already amassed 188 appearances for the club with 64 shut-outs, winning Scottish Cup medals in 1927 and 1931.

Right-half Alex Morrison, born on this day in 1887, joined Celtic from Ayr United in September 1906 and played his only match for the first team against Hibs on 8th May 1907 in the League. The following year, Alex moved back to Ayr.
