Jim Craig – Rangers 2 – 4 Celtic – Home side given a two goals start

After consecutive League titles in 1892/93 and 1893/94, Celtic had finished 2nd in the league table to Hearts in 1894/95 but had made a good start to the new campaign of 1895/96.

On this day in 1895, the Bhoys travelled across the city to meet Rangers at Ibrox and recorded a comfortable victory. The team was McArthur, Meechan, Battles, O’Rourke, Kelly, Dunbar, Madden, Blessington, Martin, Crossan and Ferguson.

There were 20,000 present and by the interval, there had been no goals. Celtic had the sun and wind behind them in the second half but Rangers took their chances better and went two up. Back came Celtic, though, with goals by Ferguson and Crossan bringing the game level.

Then Mick Dunbar, normally a playmaker, turned goal-scorer for the day with a double to make the final score Rangers 2 Celtic 4.
