Jim Craig – Young Celtic Star Kenny Dalglish makes his debut for Scotland

After being reared with Drumchapel Amateurs and having enjoyed a farmed-out spell with Cumbernauld United, Kenny Dalglish played his first match for Celtic in the League Cup Quarter Final second leg tie against Hamilton at Parkhead in September 1969.

However, for the following two seasons he was an intermittent presence in the first-team, having to compete with the likes of Willie Wallace and Lou Macari for a starting spot.

Kenny only became a consistent top-team choice at the start of season 1971-72, when he scored regularly in both the League Cup and the League. He also caught the eye of the Scottish selectors, who were looking for some new talent after the disappointments in attempting to qualify for the World Cup of 1970.

Kenny made his debut appearance for the national side on this day in 1971 against Belgium in a European championship qualifier in Aberdeen and went on to collect 102 caps in total.

On this day in 1926, Mike Haughney was born at Paisley.

Mike had played his part for the country in the Second World War, as a Commando and also a Captain in the Seaforth Highlanders.

Once peace was declared, Mike had a spell with Newtongrange Star then joined Celtic in January 1949 and went on to make 233 appearances – with 44 goals – over the next eight years, usually in the right-back slot but also making a few outings in the forward line.

Mike was in the teams that won the St Mungo Cup in 1951, the Coronation Cup in 1953 plus the League and Cup ‘Double’ of 1953-54.

He emigrated to the USA in 1957 and died at Peoria, Illinois on 22 February 2002.
