John Hartson has come to the defence of Giorgos Giakoumakis after the big Greek came in for considerable scrutiny this week for his comments post-match against Dundee at Celtic Park. After bagging a hat-trick for the Hoops to send us three points clear at the top of the cinch Premiership league table, the forward claimed that Celtic were the “best team in the league”.
That has drawn some attention from certain quarters of the media, having courted the opinion of particular ex-pros to have their say on the matter, which you can read here on The Celtic Star. The reaction has been pedantic to say the least, considering the fact that we had dismantled the current Champions inside 45 minutes several weeks ago.
Now Hartson has had his say on the Go Radio Football Show: “Well, he’ll learn. I’m not sure if he’s got a Twitter account or not. He’s obviously showing great confidence. He’s on a high after scoring his first hat-trick for the club. He’s made a big difference, coming in and being a focal point.
“That’s what Celtic centre-forwards have to do. You have to be in the position to go and win your team games, and be the outstanding player on the pitch. He’s stuck in there and the manager really likes him. You can see he’s a confident boy with his comments.
“There’s nothing wrong with saying that if you think it. Sometimes you can maybe wait until the deal is done before you go out on a limb and say things. That’s where I’ve gone wrong in the past.”

There’s no denying the confidence is surging through the man who bagged nearly 30 odd goals in the Eredivisie for a relegation battling team. After the penalty miss against Livingston and a few successive injuries afterwards, swathes of fans thought that he may not be equipped to deal with life at Celtic. But how Giorgos is turning it around with every passing game is mightily impressive. He looks to be the striker we have craved for some years now and should make our rivals be very wary considering he is our second choice after Kyogo Furuhashi.
The big Greek may just have a point in his post-match comments after all.
