Jordan Larsson’s attributes speak for themselves – it’s time for Celtic to hold talks

A Jordan Larsson transfer to Celtic seemed like a longshot, especially after he moved to Spartak Moscow and started earning a hefty sum. However, after being freed by his Russian club this summer, the Swedish international, who was on a reported £25k a week at Spartak, is very much now a player back within Celtic’s reach.

So far there has been nothing to say Celtic have shown even the slightest interest in signing Larsson, however SkySports Anthony Joseph has indicated the player’s representatives have reached out to Celtic to make them aware of their client’s availability.

This at least gives us a steer on one aspect of this possible transfer ever happening in that it tells us that their is interest from the player himself otherwise his representatives would not have contacted Celtic.

‘The reps of striker Jordan Larsson have been in contact with a number of clubs across Europe, including Celtic & Nottingham Forest.

He’s a free agent after his contract was terminated at Spartak Moscow.

Understood to be plenty of interest from EPL, Bundesliga & Serie A clubs.’

A representative reaching out to Celtic rather than Celtic reaching out to the player, is probably an indication Celtic have more pressing areas of the team that require addressing before we look at the forward positions, but there are opportunities that arise in football, ones that may well not come up again, that are surely worth considering when opportunity knocks.

Still when you are building a squad of a certain age and quality and are looking to a business model where you sell on the players brought in down the line, there is a gift horse element to being able to make a quality acquisition without the need to pay any transfer fee whatsoever.

Legendary father aside, Larsson is a top talent, would certainly add quality to the forward positions and is a player just 12 months ago we wouldn’t have been able to afford.

If his representatives are reaching out to Celtic, that’s an indication, despite EPL, Bundesliga and Serie A interest, Celtic is something the player may wish to consider.

There would be a weight of expectation on Larsson if he played for Celtic, that much cannot be denied, and whether that would have a detrimental impact on the player, or drive him on, is open to debate.

What is clear however is Larsson is a talented footballer in his own right, and if he is available without a transfer fee attached, then Celtic need to be involved in the conversation.

If his representatives are indeed now reaching out, it’s time to hear them out.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.

  1. Jordan can also play as an attacking midfielder. We just lost our left footed attacking midfielder – Tom Rogic – so this could be a like for like replacement at no cost. Forget the surname and look at the players quality and abilities.
