Kasper Schmeichel has been named in the SPFL Team of the Week following his Premier Sports Scottish League Cup final heroics against theRangers at Hampden on Sunday…
The Great Dane
The Great Dane picked up his first winners medal for the Hoops since arriving in the summer as a free agent following a dramatic 5-4 win on penalties versus rivals theRangers at the national stadium three days ago.
Schmeichel crucially saved Turkish left-back Ridvan Yilmaz’s penalty which allowed Daizen Maeda to step up and seal a 119th trophy and a 10th domestic honour for Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers over his two spells in Glasgow’s East End.
Despite conceding three domestically for the first time this season, Celtic’s no.1 pulled off important saves during the regulation period.
The 38 year-old’s world-class stop from Mohammed Diomande in the second half prior to the Ivory Coast midfielder’s equaliser is arguably his best save in a Celtic jersey yet.
Fifth trophy win of Kasper’s career
Schmeichel’s Scottish League Cup triumph is his fifth trophy win of his career. Winning the English Premier League in stunning circumstances with Leicester City in 2015/2016 will be difficult to topple, but the Danish stopper’s FA Cup win three years ago with the Foxes under the stewardship of his current manager draws parallels to his most recent accolade over theRangers.
Reaping the rewards for a fine display at Hampden, Schmeichel has been recognised as one of the star players in this week’s SPFL Team of the Week.
