Kris Commons believes cracks are starting to show in the Rangers squad

It was not too long ago that the Rangers were on top of the world. They were fresh off of beating Celtic 2-1 at Parkhead for the first time since 2010. And they had the opportunity to take a one-point lead over the reigning Scottish champions if they managed to win their game in hand.

As it turns out, they have not and have been brought back crashing down to Earth following a loss at Tynecastle Park against bottom-placed Hearts. And although they still have a game in hand, even a win will leave them two points behind the Hoops.

And Kris Commons believes cracks are starting to show in the Rangers squad. In the print edition of the Scottish Daily Mail, the former Celtic star wrote:

“The main issue is the lack of depth in the Rangers squad in key positions. Obviously, any team will miss their captain and their main goalscorer.

“But it’s all relevant. When compared to Celtic, Rangers look desperately short in certain areas and that might well prove to be key in the title race.

“Celtic now have two fully-fit strikers firing in Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard, with the £3.5million addition of Patryk Klimala thrown into the mix for good measure.

“For Rangers, there are signs of déjà vu from last season in terms of how sluggish they’ve looked after the winter break.”

This downturn in form following the winter break is nothing new for the Rangers though. It was the same story last season when they went into the break on a high and then completely went off the rails in the second half of the season.
