Leicester City accounts silent on Brendan Rodgers compensation fee

Leicester City have reported losses of £89.7m from the 2022-2023 season. The Foxes were relegated with 34 points in a season that saw Brendan Rodgers depart the club. Now, the accounts have been released, Leicester find themselves in trouble with the Premier League for PSR breaches.

The accounts did not explicitly state the compensation that the Celtic manager received in April 2023, which was a last roll of the dice for the doomed Leicester hierarchy. The departure of the ex-Celtic and Liverpool manager paved the way for a June return to Celtic after Ange Postecoglou left for Spurs.

As Rodgers was one of the Premier League’s highest-paid managers, it is likely that he and his team would have been suitably compensated for the parting of the ways at the start of April last year.

Rodgers enjoyed success at Leicester City after making the controversial switch from Celtic in February 2019. In his time at the club, Rodgers helped Leicester to two fifth-place finishes as well as winning the FA Cup and FA Community Shield.

In Rodgers’ final season, the Irishman bemoaned the lack of investment in the squad and stated that they would be up against it given the lack of quality in the squad, which ultimately resulted in the Foxes being relegated. The Irishman left at the beginning of April with Dean Smith at the helm as Leicester went down. Now, Leicester have posted £215.3m losses over three years, meaning they will likely be hit by a points deduction.

Leicester City are now chasing promotion to the English Premier League under Enzo Maresca, who was linked with the Celtic job before Rodgers. The Italian was working under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and has spent a fair amount to ensure that the Midlands club make a quick-fire return to the top flight.

Rodgers, meanwhile, will be hoping to use his return to Celtic to brush off the final season at Leicester and bring further success to Celtic. The 51-year-old has a Scottish Cup and Premiership title to compete for going into the final weeks of the season and will be desperate to continue his success in Scotland.
