Lucy Ashworth-Clifford signs contract extension at Celtic FC Women

Lucy Ashworth-Clifford has signed a new contract with Celtic FC Women, securing her future at the club until the summer of 2025…

The ACL injury at Broadwood against theRangers kept Lucy out for a year.

The wing-back suffered an ACL injury against theRangers at Broadwood in late 2022 after joining that summer. She looked promising right off the bat, being named the SWPL Player of the Month at the start of her tenure. Lucy also scored an incredible goal from the halfway line just about on the touchline had already became a first pick for Fran Alonso and a hugely popular player with the supporters.

She began the road to recovery and returned to the pitch this season against Montrose after being out of action for 13 months. Since making her return, she has performed well and has established herself as a key player in Elena Sadiku’s plans, even scoring the opening goal on the Ghirls’ return to Paradise last Sunday.  She has had two goal involvements in nine appearances overall since she came back, with a 68% pass completion rate.

If things go well, hopefully, she will want to continue her stay in Scotland with a longer extension. Contracts tend to be shorter in the women’s game and players also are happy to move around clubs and indeed countries more frequently. However Elena Sadiku appears to be building something rather special with this Celtic squad and the players are loving playing under her guidance, so that may result in more top players being happy to stay longer.

Elena Sadiku recently told The Celtic Star that she has identified the players she’d like to bring to the club this summer to strength the squad further so it’s exciting times for Celtic FC Women.

Lucy is one of the two players who have extended their time with Celtic recently as Amy Gallacher also signed a new three year deal, taking her through to 2027, just last week.

Expect Lucy and Amy Gallacher, who has been training this week after her injury, to start against theRangers at Hampden tomorrow lunchtime in the Women’s Scottish Cup semi-final.
