Lurking in the darkness

Yesterday’s disgraceful Anthony Stokes ‘rumour’ highlight the disturbing side of social media…

Social media is a major part of our life’s nowadays. Quite frankly, we couldn’t live without it. Football speaking we don’t need to rely on the rags and other sports outlets to get our daily fix of footballing news.

It’s made us all more aware of goings on with our football clubs, and makes us less reliant on the mainstream media. Supporters can now get a more balanced and honest view about their team rather than the thoughts of some agenda driven, biased hack.

But like everything else social media does have its disadvantages. There is an ugly side to the new media, especially on platforms like Twitter which can be a real sewer pit sometimes. Yesterday highlighted one of those occasions when a ‘rumour’ was spread that former Celtic and Hibs player Anthony Stokes had taken his own life.

Sorry rumour wasn’t the right word, it was a damn right lie, a despicable one at that and it was hate driven as it usually is coming from the vilest underbelly of our society. Thankfully it was proven to be false, but why would someone feel the need to start such a disgraceful lie in the first place?

It was evil, so wrong and to make it worse it was most likely a fully grown adult who made it all up. Why? Death is not the sort of thing to lie about. You do wonder what goes through the heads of these sick morons.

That was someone’s son, brother, someone’s father they were spreading lies about. What must have his family thought when they heard about it? They would have understandably been worried sick.

Saying someone is dead is not a ‘laugh’ or ‘banter’ it’s pure evil. Only a depraved individual could make up such a lie. Sadly social media has a more than a few of them lurking in the darkness.
