Maurice Ross is getting his minutes and years mixed up

Giorgos Giakoumakis has fair got under their skin has he not? That schooling of theRangers defence in the recent Glasgow Derby ‘skelping was probably the moment supporters of the current incarnation that plays out of Ibrox realised Celtic, even without Kyogo Furuhashi, are a force to be reckoned with.

The hat-trick on Sunday, coming late in the day as all connected with theRangers prayed for Dundee to stand firm, probably infuriated them still further. Yet the apparent temerity of the post-match comments from Celtic’s weekend hero seems to have been the straw that broke the camel’s back – especially for their friends in the press.

There was no back of the bus mentality from Giorgos Giakoumakis when he had this to say post-match.  “We showed that we are a better team, that’s obvious. We showed that we worked harder in the field. I think that we will win the championship, it’s something that we want very much for the club and the fans.”

We’ll all have our own opinions as supporters as to whether those remarks were ill-advised or just a genuine summation of the season so far. Personally, I liked the confidence that was suddenly exuding from a player who six months ago seemed bereft of it, however there have possibly been as many column inches set-aside to the Greek striker’s comments than there were of his man of the match performance at the weekend, and all it proves is they are rattled.

Now former Ibrox player Maurice Ross, a man who lost his job at Notts County for a somewhat questionable use of stereotyping language to describe the performance of a black player whilst assistant boss at Meadow Lane, has decided to add his tuppence worth to the Daily Record, and question the ‘class’ of Giakoumakis’ post-match comments.

“I think he needs to be a bit more humble. If I was in theRangers dressing room, those comments would just be fuel for me. Celtic were better than (the)Rangers two weeks ago, that we can all agree on. I think theRangers players would agree on that as well.

“But Celtic have been top of the league for about 10 minutes this season,” Ross added, although it’s actually 20 days and counting not 10 minutes. “A wee bit of humility and a wee bit of respect would be a better way of going about your business. But there’s no doubt this will be used as fuel by that Rangers squad. For those comments, that’s a lack of class if you ask me.

“Celtic have been good recently and we must give them credit for that. But you’ve been top of the table for a week, mate! Come on, settle petal! I’d be saying, ‘What are you doing? This is not how you behave at a top club. We’re humble, we win with respect and we lose with respect’.”

Being lectured on humility and respect by Maurice Ross, after he described his own player, according to SkySports, as- “reminds me of one of those African players who is actually much older than he says he is” is probably akin to being reprimanded on the sanctity of marriage by Tiger Woods, although I assume the only thoughts Giorgos Giakoumakis had when hearing such words of advice was ‘who is Maurice Ross?’

What is clear from the fallout surrounding Giakoumakis’ comments is the mainstream media intend making more out of this than there is. You’d assume the reason for that is they want to find some way to encourage their favourites to get their house in order and make a fist of a title challenge.

And that in itself has to be a worry if you are unfortunate enough to be a supporter of the latest Ibrox club. Does it really need to take Giorgos Giakoumakis’ bravado to force you into action? Was a Derby ‘skelping not enough? What about a nine-point turnaround since the league restarted after the winter break? Or four away games played in the same time without a single win? Is none of that motivation enough for the team playing out of Ibrox? If it’s not I don’t envisage the comments of a Celtic striker being pinned to the dressing room wall is likely to do the job.

Maurice Ross may have been desperate to give his comments on this one, but more than likely those in the mainstream media worked their way through a list of rent a quotes until they found one daft enough to comment.

And all that shows is those in the press corps are more worried about Celtic’s form – and theRangers lack of it – than they actually are about Giorgos Giakoumakis refusing to sit at the back of the bus.

If they really need a stunt like this to try and motivate their heroes, maybe they should aim for a more credible public commentator than Maurice Ross, as that particular choice smacked of desperation and embarrassment in equal measure.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.

  1. Apparently the racist tax dodger didn’t know racism was wrong having been brought up in the klan trrrradishun, and has had to be educated about it, so that’s all right then and all is forgiven.

As for “10 minutes”, it would be more apt to say that in their 10 year existence, sevco, having won only one trophy, are relatively speaking 10 minute wonders.

Truly, the peepul and their minions are soooo fookin stupid!

  2. It always makes me smile when extremely insignificant passenger type ex players people don’t even remember, jump onto media posts to use as a podium to shout, “hi, remember me?” “I played for the previous club who played in Govan” .
    “I did, honest, I did” .
Searching for limelight today because he obviously never had any before!
I seriously love when these nobodys embarrass themselves.
What makes it even funnier is how much it highlights this particular guy, (Ross), isn’t even aware that big Gorgios hasn’t said anything that players have said every season, yes, including the now extinct club and their ten year old replacement club.
Keep embarrassing yourself Ross. I’m sure your lack of education will trigger a few minds and increase your chances of a couple of fans of the old extinct club to say, “hey! I think I remember seeing his name in one of the old match programmes”.
