“Maybe you are disappointed with the way it went, mate,” Ange tells BBC’s self confessed Rangers fan

Kenny McIntyre, BBC Sportsound’s supporter of theRangers, spoke to Ange Postecoglou after Celtic’s 2-0 win over St Mirren which maintains the three points advantage over Kenny’s team, now with just nine games to play, and increases Celtic’s goal difference advantage by another goal. McIntyre, as you would expect, wasn’t too happy, when asking the questions for the supposedly impartial publicly funded state broadcaster…

theRangers Supporter:  We’ve seen some fantastic matches at Celtic Park this season, that wasn’t one of them as it was a hard watch at times?

Ange Postecoglou: It depends on what you are looking for. Maybe you are disappointed with the way it went, mate. I’m not really sure about that. We have won a game 2-0 and they didn’t really create anything and we have dominated the football. It is hard when the opposition sits so deep and if anything I thought we were solid and stayed composed and did what he had to do to wear down an opposition that was sitting deep and defending well and had not conceded many goals this year and I thought we kept our composure well.

theRangers Supporter:  In terms of the tactics of St Mirren, was that as negative as you have seen at Celtic Park this season?

Ange Postecoglou: I don’t think it is negative as it is how most teams will try and set up against us. You try and understand that they will do that in order to stay in the game longer. From our perspective, we didn’t feel a threat going the other way which allowed us to stay composed. The key for us was not to get sidetracked by any anxiety that we hadn’t scored and just stick to playing our football and waiting for the opportunity. We had chances before we scored but once we scored we had some good chances to score the second goal and in the end, the boys did the job.

theRangers Supporter:  There was a bit of anxiety in the stands in the first half, does that transmit to the park do you feel?

Ange Postecoglou: I don’t think so because if it did we wouldn’t be having the outcomes we have. Our supporters know we are getting to the business end of the season and they want us to play well, score goals and win games and when it doesn’t happen straight away you can understand that. At the same time they got behind the team when we needed them and I think if we were reacting to that you would not get the outcomes that we have had this season. We have been unbelievable at home this year and not just in our football but in the way we have controlled games. We controlled this game totally.

theRangers Supporter:  It was a good finish from Cameron Carter-Vickers, he has been a big player for you this season?

Ange Postecoglou: Yes, it was. He and Carl were good tonight and it wasn’t easy as they get the ball and there were so many bodies ahead of them and they kept their discipline and it was good for him to get a goal and sometimes in games like this it takes somebody who is not an attacking threat normally or a set-piece to break open the opposition. He took his goal well and he has scored a couple of vital ones for us this year and it was good for him to get that reward.

theRangers Supporter:  It was good to see Karamoko Dembele come on as he has been spoken about a lot in Scotland, he is a big, big talent and what do you see in him?

Ange Postecoglou: He has been a bit unfortunate this year as he started pre-season and he was looking pretty good and then unfortunately he was on the receiving end of an ordinary tackle that put him out for most of the year. He has been working hard in the background to get an opportunity and it was good to give him some game time.

All the subs did well – Niro, Tommy and James in particular when they came on they really took control of the game for us when they came on. It is going to be important in the run-in that we now have a strong squad and guys that can come off the bench and make an impact and it was good to see that happen tonight.

theRangers Supporter:  We are all expecting a tight league race, do you come off at full-time and seek out how Rangers are getting on?

Ange Postecoglou: You guys had a different view earlier on this season. I still don’t know how they have got on. I don’t care as it makes no difference to us. What is important is that we know if we are winning games of football then we are going to be in good shape and I said all along that I wasn’t looking at the ladder when we were six points behind and I am not looking at it now.

What’s important is what we are doing. We have a big challenge again on Sunday as that’s another type of game and I think you’ve seen with all the games that they all now have an edge as everybody is playing for something which is great as that is what you want. Every game now if you asked every team they would say they are focused on themselves.
