Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert has said that Dom McKay’s shock exit is a blow to the club that will likely require a restart with the Chief Executive resigning earlier today. Michael Nicholson was announced as interim CEO as the club’s Head of Legal and Sporting Affairs moved to fill the gap left by McKay.
Speaking to Go Radio, Lambert said that he had met with McKay a few times and knew that he was a man that had Celtic close to his heart and wanted to succeed in the role.
“I think it’s a blow. When you have the transition of Peter leaving, you have to get somebody in there that can handle the club.
“Dominic was doing quite a good job. They have done ok in the European games, they lost the other week to Rangers, but now they are going to have to restart. That’s the big issue that arises from that.”
“I met him a couple of times and thought he came across really well.
“He was a well-spoken guy and he had the club at heart. He wanted the club to do well.”
McKay was appointed amidst an enormous overhaul with the club looking to transition into a modern age. However, questions remain as to whether Celtic will follow a path towards modernising the footballing department.
Lambert says that it was a difficult period for the former SRU chief to arrive at the club but he seemed to be beginning to take shape.
“There is always going to be a transition period when a lot of players left, a new manager coming in and a new chief executive coming in, and Peter stepping down.
“They seemed to weather the storm after the shaky start they had.
“They had a lot of plaudits for the way they were playing, but if they don’t win games all the board room stuff will start to come out.”
Best of luck to Dom. However, Celtic need to make sure that they can continue the process of modernising the football club and improving into the future.
