Mikey Johnston’s West Brom heartbreak as Celtic winger misses out on EPL play-off

Mikey Johnston’s loan spell at West Brom is at an end after the Baggies were beaten 3-1 by Southampton. The Irishman started on the left wing for West Brom at St Mary’s Stadium and was one of the visitors stand out players; however, they were not able to do enough to lay a glove on Russell Martin’s side.

The Celtic winger has made twenty appearances since making the loan move to the EFL Championship. In that time, he has scored seven goals and assisted on two occasions. The form has had West Brom fans clamouring to make a permanent move for the attacker; however, with the defeat this evening, Johnston will return to Celtic and await another season of uncertainty.

Celtic could get £5m for the player, something that could be reinvested into new arrivals. Although, the manager could see the confidence from performances down South as an opportunity to reintegrate him into the team.

Southampton will compete with Leeds for a place in the Premier League and the associated riches. Celtic have been linked with a move for Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy as they look to secure a replacement for No.1 Joe Hart, who is set to hang up his gloves at the end of the season.
