More away games for Celtic as Livi announce support for Premiership reconstruction plan

Livingston have backed proposals to create 14-team top flight next season, which would increase Celtic’s potential away venues with two new teams being included in the league next season.

The West Lothian club have moved to support calls by Hearts to increase the numbers in the SPFL to 44 teams. The SPFL created a committee to explore potential reconstruction with teams like Falkirk and Partick Thistle feeling hard done by following the vote.

The statement read that Livingston would be supporting the proposals as it would offer the most positive deal available to Scottish football during this testing time.

““We believe that permanent league reconstruction is the most progressive way forward for Scottish football as a whole.

“The introduction of the Highland League and Lowland League champions every year into the SPFL will bring the total number of clubs from 42 to 44. This would have a minimal financial effect on all current SPFL clubs.

“We feel it is fundamental to the sporting integrity of Scottish football that no club suffers the financial effects which relegation would bring, as a result of the remaining league games not being fulfilled.

“This league reconstruction model is not only achievable, but it is also fair.

“No club will be prejudiced by the league ending early through no fault of their own.

“As a club we passionately believe our proposal, if adopted, would show Scottish football at its progressive best.

“It would achieve the twin objectives of no member club being unduly punished for an incomplete season on the field of play, while preserving the sporting integrity of the game.”

The view of Livingston to increase the league could create more away venues for Celtic across the season to visit as well as a top 6 and bottom 8 split, meaning that there would be four Glasgow Derbys and trips to tougher grounds like Pittodrie remaining intact.
