Neil Lennon, Celtic’s Mischief Maker: “He knows his comments will wind up his detractors”

Unfortunately Ian Bankier’s impression of Tommy Cooper didn’t have too many people laughing, other than those COVID cowboys on the other side of the city. It might have been better had he put on a Fez when he told us yesterday that…..he used to be indecisive but now he is not quite sure. If he and members of the Board ran their many other companies in this way, the shareholders would have had them out the door long before this.

Why is it that Neil Lennon is the only person at the club who is allowed to speak publicly? On two occasions, the Board have allowed the manager to give the vote of confidence in himself, whilst they remained silent. Peter Lawwell apologised for the Dubai trip when the manager was self isolating. As soon as he was back in front of a microphone, Neil Lennon showed no remorse and complained about how the club was being treated unfairly. There was a lot of sense in what he said at that time but it is obvious that the manager answers to no one at the moment.

He has made reference to planning to be Celtic manager for next season(s). There is no way he will be manager beyond the end of this season at the latest. The Board know it, he knows it, the players know it, the supporters know it…..the dogs in the street know it. He has insisted there is no linkage between the CEO’s impending departure and his position. That’s the very same person who refused to look at other CVs and offered Neil Lennon the job in the shower. I hope that being able to shower in a suit is not part of Dominic McKay’s job description.

He has praised the performances against St Mirren and St Johnstone and I am sure that word “brilliant” escaped from his lips. Sure there were some encouraging signs in those games only to be outnumbered by the usual failings. Those same dogs in the street couldn’t be dragged indoors to watch the games.

So why is the manager coming out with such fantasies? I suspect that he has already been told he is to be relieved of his duties. Other than a loan move, there was no backing for him in the transfer window. Not sure when he was told but probably before the Dubai trip. Allowing that to go ahead was probably part of the agreement for him to go. That would explain why he was so vociferous in his defence of the trip. Was he trying to justify it when others at the club had warned against it?

So essentially he knows he is off and is going to say whatever he wants whenever a microphone is put in front of him. He has gone rogue. I guess there is also a certain element of mischief about it in that he knows his comments will wind up his detractors. My advice is to ignore all the noise in the post match interviews.

I appreciate that there is no proof to back up my thoughts but what other interpretation could there be other than complete incompetence on the part of the Board? I am just trying to make some sense out of all this nonsense.

When will Neil Lennon go and why has he not gone sooner? I don’t know the answers but it can’t be too long before he departs. In the meantime, prepare yourself for more fantasy football and post match noise.
